It seems like Instagram has removed the handy feature to trim videos before uploading them as Stories. Many users noticed that the feature was missing in the past week as complaints have started piling up on Reddit and X. This has left many scrambling to edit clips outside the app — and questioning why the feature vanished.
The trim tool previously let users adjust the start and end points of videos longer than Instagram’s 60-second Story limit. Without it, videos over a minute long now automatically upload the first 60 seconds by default, with no option to select a different segment. This forces users to manually edit videos to the right length before opening Instagram, a process many call clunky compared to the app’s built-in tool.
“This sucks,” wrote one Reddit user, explaining that the in-app trim feature was precise and easy to use, unlike phone editing tools. Others called the change “ridiculous” and speculated whether it’s a bug or intentional. Some Android users noted the feature disappeared for them months ago, while iPhone users say it vanished after updating to Instagram version 366.0.0.
Frustration centers on the extra steps now required. One user described spending twice as long preparing Stories, while another said new users might accidentally post cut-off videos without realizing trimming isn’t an option. Though some hope this is a glitch, others suspect it’s permanent. “Considering how many of us are having the same issue, this is a ‘feature’ Instagram rolled out,” wrote a Reddit commenter.
A few users theorized Instagram might be pushing people toward Edits, its upcoming standalone video-editing app. Removing a useful feature from within Instagram and offering Edits as the easy alternative might just be the exact plan. After all, it’s not uncommon for platforms to create a problem and then offer up a solution. The company has not publicly addressed the trim tool’s removal or responded to users asking for clarity.
Longtime users say this fits a pattern of confusing updates. “Instagram has become a UX nightmare,” one person wrote. Others joked the app is “hands down the most annoying app ever that we can’t stop using.”
That said, it’s unclear if this is a bug or an intended change. We’ll keep track of the situation and post an update if and when there’s something to share. In the meantime, let us know if you still have the option to trim videos in the comments below.
