Meta’s recent v68 update that debuted Meta Horizon app sent the VR community into a tailspin. Users reported significant downgrades in stability, making VR games and apps nearly unplayable. The culprit? A bug in the basic API of OpenXR toolkit which left developers and gamers alike in a bind.

Thankfully, Meta hasn’t left you hanging in the virtual void. A speedy hotfix has been released in their Public Test Channel (PTC), squashing the bug and bringing stability back to your VR adventures.

The issue primarily affected users running applications through OpenXR, a fancy term for the software that lets your headset and games communicate seamlessly. This meant that some games, especially those built with Unreal Engine 4.27.2, became unplayable when using the Oculus runtime. The latest Oculus update on the beta branch caused the OpenXR Toolkit to malfunction. Games like iRacing would barely load, leaving users stuck at a maddening 5%.

Users flooded forums with their woes. Quest’s PCVR OpenXR runtime was performing so poorly that even the Meta Quest 2, 3, and Rift S devices weren’t spared.

If you’re still struggling, temporarily disabling the toolkit using the companion app should keep your VR adventures alive. But with the fix rolling out in the PTC, soon you’ll be back to scaling virtual mountains and conquering digital dragons without your world feeling like it’s doing the Macarena.

It’s great that Meta has acted quickly to resolve the issue.
