Meta is working to address an issue that has left some Quest headsets unusable after a recent software update. According to reports from users on Meta’s community forums, the problem affects Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest 3S devices, leaving them stuck in startup loops or entirely unresponsive. The issue has sparked frustration among users, especially those with devices that are out of warranty.

Several users shared similar experiences, stating their headsets had been functioning perfectly until they installed the latest update. Afterward, the devices either failed to boot properly or became entirely bricked. Attempts to fix the problem through factory resets have often made the situation worse, with some headsets refusing to turn on at all.

Meta acknowledged the issue in a forum post, saying they are actively working to resolve it. The company assured users that most headsets should now function normally. However, for those still experiencing problems, Meta recommends reaching out to customer support for assistance.

Android Authority, which spotted Meta’s announcement, reported that the company is offering free repairs for affected headsets, regardless of warranty status. This is a significant step, as many users expressed outrage over being asked to pay for refurbished units to replace devices broken by the update. One user noted, “So that’s what we get for buying it early, and supporting them: a bricked unit we never really got to dive into fully….? They have to do better – they must. Making us pay more money can’t be the solution.”

Some users speculated that older firmware versions might be incompatible with the new update, causing the failures. Others raised concerns about potential legal action, citing Meta’s responsibility for the software rollout. The timing has also drawn attention, with several users pointing out that newly purchased headsets were bricked during initial setup — a frustrating experience for holiday gift recipients.

Meta has not yet provided a timeline for a full resolution, so we’ll keep tabs on the situation and will post an update if and when there’s something to share.
