Starting in November, Android users will be able to buy and play Xbox games directly from Microsoft’s Xbox app, thanks to a court ruling that forces Google to open up its mobile store in the US. Sarah Bond, President of Xbox, confirmed the news on X, stating that this update will bring more flexibility and choice to mobile gamers.

What’s different? Instead of going through Google Play, users can make purchases and access Xbox titles right in the Xbox app. It’s a notable step in breaking down Android’s tightly controlled app ecosystem. Bond expressed excitement, saying this move fits with Microsoft’s mission to get more games on more devices.

Google is currently appealing the court’s decision, but they are required to make the changes by November 1. It’s not clear yet if this update will enable games to run natively on Android devices or if it’s more about cloud streaming. However, it’s definitely a significant change in how people will be able to access Xbox games on mobile.

For Microsoft, this is a win that could open up more opportunities in the mobile space, breaking into territory that’s long been controlled by Google’s Play Store. In fact, Google even risks having to sell part of its operations in the ongoing legal battle. As a weekend mobile gamer myself, I can’t wait for the walled garden to come crumbling down outside the US too. Now, if only we can get Apple to do the same.
