Motorola Edge 50 Pro users in India have been voicing their frustrations over a persistent issue: the phone dropping to 4G/LTE during voice calls, despite VoNR (Voice over New Radio) being supported on multiple carriers. Hundreds of comments in the Motorola community forum reveal growing dissatisfaction, with users wondering why their supposedly 5G-enabled calls keep falling back to the previous generation network.
Motorola’s support team has been responding, but their replies have been somewhat generic, leaving users feeling like they’re stuck in a loop of “try this” and “show us that.” The most common message? VoNR is technically working, but the icon isn’t showing up. Despite their assurances, users remain skeptical, especially when they still see their calls dipping back into the land of 4G.
Enter Tom, a Motorola forum admin, who recently stepped in with a more detailed response that shed some light on the situation. Tom explained that VoNR in India is still a work in progress. While Jio has started deploying it, coverage is spotty, meaning that depending on your location, your phone might drop to 4G/LTE when placing a call. Airtel, on the other hand, hasn’t even rolled out VoNR yet, which explains why calls on their network consistently fallback.
Regarding VoNR, it’s still being rolled out and can be hit or miss in India. As far as I know, only Jio has started deploying VoNR, and it’s not available in all areas yet. Airtel hasn’t started rolling out VoNR on their network yet, or at least I haven’t seen any information about it. This is why 5G calls on the Airtel network fall back to 4G/LTE. For Jio, it depends on the area. If VoNR is enabled in your area, your phone should stay on 5G when placing a call. Otherwise, it will drop to 4G/LTE.
Tom also addressed concerns about the lack of significant updates, countering claims that Motorola has only been pushing out security patches. He pointed out that a June update brought improvements to 4K video playback, camera performance, and device heating, and that the July security update is on its way.
In June, we released an update (U2UM34.27-38-1-2-3) that included improvements for issues like laggy 4K playback, camera lagging, and a slight reduction in phone heating. We are also in the process of rolling out the July security update (U2UMS34.27-38-1-2-3-1).
However, the admin acknowledged that VoNR might still be hit or miss until it’s more widely available across India.
Motorola’s support team continues to gather feedback, promising to escalate issues to the right teams. They’re asking users for more details, hoping to pinpoint the root cause of the problem. But for now, Edge 50 Pro users will have to wait a bit longer for a smooth 5G calling experience.
