For some Motorola users, the Android 14 update brought a wave of frustration alongside the anticipated features. We’ve already highlighted the missing lock screen customization on multiple Motorola devices, and it seems the update also delivered a noticeable downgrade in the quality of Bluetooth audio volume for Moto Edge 30 Ultra owners.

Since the update, numerous Moto Edge 30 Ultra owners have reported a significant drop in Bluetooth audio volume. Users describe the sound as significantly quieter, with 100% volume now feeling like a mere 50%. This unexpected change has left many music lovers disappointed, struggling to enjoy their tunes at their usual listening levels.

A Chorus of frustration on forums and social media

The chorus of complaints has been growing steadily on forums and social media. One user stated, “The Bluetooth volume on Android 14 is A LOT lower than it was on Android 13. 100% now feels like 50%. This is an extremely serious issue because it messes with the way we listen to music. It is now nearly impossible with this bug.”

Another user, clearly frustrated by the lack of response, directly addressed a Motorola forum moderator who has been keeping tabs on the issue: “I don’t get it Tom… Why ignore again?…PLEASE let us know what the current state of this Volume issue is. What are the engineers saying? You told us you’re bugging them every few days about that. How come there’s no update on it yet?”

The sentiment echoes across various platforms, with users highlighting the inconvenience and questioning the lack of a fix for months. While the issue seems widespread among Edge 30 Ultra users, reports haven’t surfaced for other Motorola devices that received the Android 14 update.

Motorola finally breaks the silence

Finally, after months of user outcry, Motorola has addressed the situation with reduced Bluetooth audio volume on the Edge 30 Ultra. A forum admin named Tom confirmed that the audio output change was intentional, implemented to comply with global audio safety standards. “We appreciate your patience as we looked into the recent change in audio output,” Tom stated. “After consulting with our team, we’ve confirmed that this adjustment was made intentionally to align with global audio safety standards.”

While the explanation sheds light on the reasoning behind the change, it doesn’t erase the initial frustration users experienced. It’s important to acknowledge the global health concern surrounding hearing loss, especially among young people. According to the World Health Organization, over a billion young people worldwide are at risk of hearing damage due to unsafe listening practices. Furthermore, nearly half of teenagers and young adults aged 12-35 in middle and high-income countries listen to unsafely loud music through smartphones and other devices.

Granted, Motorola’s decision to prioritize audio safety standards is a significant step in promoting responsible audio habits. However, the lack of clear communication during the initial months left many users confused and frustrated. The reduced Bluetooth audio volume on the Moto Edge 30 Ultra might be a necessary adjustment for the greater good, but a smoother rollout with transparent communication could have significantly reduced user angst.

Interestingly, Pixel users have previously reported a similar issue, but Google hasn’t put out any official statement like Motorola just did. Whether the reduced audio volume on Pixels is related to the audio safety standards is still a mystery.
