Firefox users who’ve been waiting years for proper HDR video support on Windows finally have something to celebrate. The feature just landed in Firefox Nightly, bringing the browser closer to matching what Chrome and Edge have offered for a while now.

According to a Reddit post from user TalactiteWonder on r/firefox, HDR videos now play correctly in the latest Nightly build on Windows. YouTube’s HDR content displays with proper colors and brightness, though there’s a small catch. Most users will need to flip a switch in about:config first. Setting media.wmf.force.allow-p010-format to true does the trick, at least for systems running Nvidia graphics cards.

If that preference name seems oddly specific, it is. The same Reddit post says the toggle basically forces P010 format support, and notes that it had been blocked on Nvidia GPUs in the past. That lines up with Mozilla’s own tracking: Bugzilla entry 1497294 discusses native handling for P010 (DXGI_FORMAT_P010) and includes a note saying P010 was disabled on Nvidia adapters, along with the line, “We add the preference media.wmf.force.allow-p010-format to force enable it.”

In plain terms, P010 is a 10-bit pixel format often used in the video pipeline for HDR. And Firefox, on Windows, has historically had to juggle hardware decode output and color conversion in ways that could make HDR support feel “almost there,” but not quite consistent across GPUs and drivers.

That said, not everything is smooth yet. Some users reported broken HDR playback on ARM devices, particularly Snapdragon X1 laptops, regardless of the config flag. One user with an Intel Iris Xe machine mentioned washed-out colors even with the setting enabled. Mozilla engineers are asking people to file bug reports for these issues.

Someone even commented they’d just switched away from Firefox the day before because of missing HDR support, spending hours migrating their setup. The feature request threads on r/firefox have been piling up for months, with some discussions dating back years. A post from just six days ago titled “Firefox Still Doesn’t Support HDR in 2026” collected 375 upvotes and dozens of frustrated comments.

This development follows other recent Firefox changes, such as the removal of the bottom navigation bar from Nightly.

HDR image support remains missing, which several users pointed out as the next priority. For now, video playback represents progress for a browser that’s been playing catch-up on this front. The feature should hit stable Firefox releases in the coming months if testing goes well.
