So you saw the Android 16 update notification, then went ahead and initiated the update process. After waiting for close to half an hour, you pick up your phone only to see that almost nothing has changed. If that sounds like what you experienced, then you’re not alone.

It seems Google’s hurry to release Android 16 into the wild has resulted in it fumbling so hard that hundreds of Pixel users are wondering why there’s no change following the update. Don’t believe me? Well, here’s the main thread on Google’s support forums that has garnered over 640+ votes from users who feel that way.

Many Pixel users are downright confused. They installed an update close to around 1GB only to be greeted by the same features they had before the update. Furthermore, the only noticeable change with the update, which is the addition of the Pixel VIPs widget, was also missing for many but is now rolling out for everyone.

So what exactly is going on? Well, most users assumed they would be greeted by the all-new Material 3 Expressive UI following the update. Google showed off the tweaked UI ahead of the Android 16 release, and that appears to be the main reason why a whole bunch of people feel like they got a bugged Android 16 update because it brought none of the Material 3 Expressive goodness.

While all coverage about the upcoming UI mentioned that it won’t be part of the initial Android 16 update, a lot of Pixel fans seem to have missed the memo. As I highlighted on our sister site PiunikaWeb, this new UI will be part of the Android 16 QPR1 update, which should arrive in October.

But I understand the confusion. When you install an OS update, you expect to see big changes, more so than you’d expect to get with feature drops or other monthly patches. However, Google’s hurried approach to getting Android 16 out there meant that the company didn’t have time to fully refine Material 3 Expressive in time.

Come to think of it, if Google hadn’t launched Android 16 early and stuck with the same schedule as last year, it would have had enough time to make Android 16 the big update it should have been. Instead, all we see right now are a few minor tweaks here and there in the name of an OS update. Most users probably won’t even notice those minor changes anyway, hence the confusion online.

A couple of days ago I came across a take from Android expert, Mishaal Rahman, who expressed that “it’s actually a big update” and didn’t want to hear otherwise. However, I’m part of the crowd saying “otherwise.” While Mishaal does highlight plenty of features that Android 16 brings to the table, including things like Live Activities, the catch is that most of those features won’t go live until the A16 QPR1 drop. Meaning that the “big update” isn’t here yet. The other changes are mostly under the hood, so regular users don’t have new stuff to tinker with.

Now, to get to the point. No, you didn’t receive a buggy Android 16 update. That’s exactly how Google intended it to be, plain and boring with some tweaks here and there. Google’s saving the big changes for later in the year so you’ll have to hang in there.

And in case you’re jealous seeing all those iPhone users sharing screenshots of the new “Liquid Glass” UI on iOS 26, you too can jump on board the Android 16 QPR1 Beta program to explore the Material 3 Expressive UI. It might not be as flashy as what Apple has whipped up, but it certainly feels a lot more polished at the time of this writing.
