Nvidia recently released their latest Game Ready Driver version 555.99, but many gamers have reported crashes and issues when trying to play games after installing the new driver update. If you’re one of the affected users who installed the latest update and games now keep crashing to the desktop, then here’s what you need to know about the problem.

User reports of crashes

Across gaming forums and social media, there has been a flurry of reports from frustrated gamers experiencing crashes with the new 555.99 driver. One user posted, “anyone else try new driver and get instant crashing on news screen?”

Another detailed their issues on Reddit: “I was having an issue with my computer crashing whenever I played pretty much any game. I would be able to play them for about two minutes before they crashed…I tried uninstalled all the Nvidia programs which allowed me to play the games but certain games required me to have an updated driver.”

Even major games like Halo Infinite appear to be affected, with one user tweeting “latest driver destroyed Halo Infinite lol it’s apparently a driver issue and won’t load the game for me lmao”.

Nvidia acknowledged the bug

In response to the reports, a Nvidia staff member acknowledged the problem on the company’s forums stating “I added it to the Open Issues list yesterday. We are looking into this.”

The official Halo support Twitter account also stated “The #HaloInfinite team is investigating reports that a recent NVIDIA driver causes a crash on launch.”

What to do if affected?

For those experiencing crashes with the 555.99 driver, the current recommendations are to roll back to the previous 555.85 driver version. Nvidia provides downloads for previous drivers on their website.

Halo support also advised “If you’re experiencing this, roll back to version 555.85.” They also suggested submitting a support ticket if issues persist after rolling back the driver version. In case you aren’t familiar with how to downgrade Nvidia drivers, I’ve embedded a useful video on the topic below for you to refer to:

For now, it appears reverting to 555.85 may resolve the crashing issues while Nvidia investigates the problems with their latest 555.99 release. Gamers should avoid updating to 555.99 until Nvidia provides a stable fix or new driver version. Check back for further updates on a resolution to this driver issue impacting game stability.
