Have you tried looking for an older photo or video in a WhatsApp chat recently, only to find it missing from the media gallery? You’re not alone. A growing number of WhatsApp users are reporting a frustrating bug that prevents older media files from appearing in the “Media, Links, and Docs” section within chats.
The issue seems to affect long-running conversations with extensive media histories. Users describe opening a chat, tapping the contact or group name to view all shared media, but only finding items from the last few months displayed. Many specifically mention that media older than April 2024 seems to vanish from this overview page.
Thankfully, the photos and videos don’t appear to be deleted permanently. Users have confirmed that if they manually scroll back through the main chat conversation itself, they can still find and view the older media files. The problem seems limited to how WhatsApp is indexing or displaying these older files within the dedicated media section.
Naturally, users are getting frustrated because they now have to scroll through years worth of chats just to see older images. One Redditor, Couch-Slacker, noted, “I’m facing the same issue. Can access the media by scrolling through chat but the media page shows media only from past 1 year.” Another user, Knightsbridge_1896, expressed similar frustration, stating, “Same issue here – Android Phone – last pictures connected to a specific person from April 2024… Searching for photos is a mess now”. For those who rely on WhatsApp to store or quickly find important images like receipts or documents, this bug makes searching practically impossible.
Interestingly, the problem seems largely confined to Android users. Reports suggest that individuals using WhatsApp on iPhones are not encountering the same issue with their media history.
I was able to reproduce the issue myself on my Android devices. Checking a group chat from a few years ago, I could see old photos embedded in the chat history when scrolling back. However, navigating to the group’s media page resulted in a “No photos found” message, despite the media clearly being present in the chat thread. So it’s clear that WhatsApp is ignoring older images and videos in the Media section. I was, however, able to see images shared in the form of documents when I switched to the ‘Docs’ tab.
Some users speculate the issue might stem from a recent app update affecting media indexing. Attempts to report the bug through official channels have apparently been met with automated responses, sometimes mistaking it for a backup issue. For now, affected users have little choice but to manually scroll through chats or hope for a fix from Meta in an upcoming WhatsApp update.
