Samsung’s highly anticipated One UI 7.0 software update has been indefinitely delayed, according to recent reports. This news comes in the wake of criticism aimed at the tech giant for allegedly mimicking Apple’s design language in its latest product releases.
Renowned tipster Ice Universe shared on X that there are currently “no plans to launch [One UI 7 Beta] in the near future,” hinting at a significant setback in Samsung’s software development timeline. In fact, a week ago, there were rumors that we might get to see One UI 7.0 beta release in the third week of August.
The delay might be linked to broader issues within Samsung’s mobile division. A report from Korean news outlet AjuNews, later highlighted by SamMobile, reveals that Samsung Electronics Chairman Jay Y. Lee has ordered a complete management review of the company’s mobile division (Samsung MX) following accusations of copying Apple’s designs.
The controversy stems from Samsung’s recent unveiling of new foldable phones, smartwatches, and wireless earbuds. Critics and consumers alike were quick to point out similarities between Samsung’s Galaxy Buds 3 series and Apple’s AirPods, as well as between the Galaxy Watch Ultra and the Apple Watch Ultra. Popular tech reviewer, MKBHD, made a video to highlight the same thing, although, many criticized the half-baked information share in the video.
According to insider sources, Chairman Lee, known for his typically calm demeanor, reportedly became angered by the plagiarism allegations and quality control issues surrounding the new products. The internal atmosphere at Samsung MX is described as “very bad,” with tensions rising and personnel actions taken against some executives, including the division’s leader.
The design similarities were particularly noticeable in the Galaxy Buds 3 and Buds 3 Pro, which now feature stems reminiscent of AirPods, along with similar gesture controls. The Galaxy Watch Ultra’s boxy design and orange accents also drew comparisons to Apple’s offering.
In fact, recent leaks indicate that Samsung’s latest One UI 7.0 update is also heavily inspired by iOS. So it’s not that far from a stretch to assume that the delay might be correlated. That said, it’s unlikely that Samsung will completely step away from its direction with One UI 7.0 in such a short period. We’ll have to wait and see how this development impacts Samsung’s future software and hardware design language.
