Pinterest’s recent app update seems to have left a large part of its user base up in arms. The biggest point of contention? The sudden disappearance of the beloved swipe functionality.
For years, Pinterest users have effortlessly navigated through pins by simply swiping left or right to move between images, or swiping down to exit a pin and return to their main feed. It was a smooth, intuitive way to browse. Now, that’s reportedly gone for many, replaced by a need to tap a tiny back arrow at the top of the screen. This change has thrown a major wrench into the user experience, especially for those who enjoy scrolling with just one hand. Here’s a video of the functionality over a decade ago:
Naturally, many have taken to X and Reddit to express their frustration with the change. A good chunk of users initially thought that it was a bug or a glitch with their own app, only to discover it was a deliberate change from Pinterest.
One frustrated user took to Reddit, exclaiming,
Who the heck decided it would be a good idea to get rid of swiping between and out of pins?? like genuinely i cannot fathom ANYBODY who would ever make a mobile app without the functionality of swiping??
Another user also chimed in stating,
Omg!!! I came here because I thought I had a bug! Why tf would you take away swiping when that was one of the primary functions of the app.
Similarly, there’s a flood of reports on X as well:
It’s not just the swipe feature, either. Some users are also reporting an increase in ads, appearing with much greater frequency than before. This, combined with the clunkier navigation, is making the app feel less enjoyable for many who use it daily for inspiration and creative exploration. One user claims they shared feedback about the change as well:
I literally submitted feedback to their website about it. I don’t normally do things like that but I’ve spent too many years perfecting my boards just to lose the ability to swipe through them for my daily dopamine hits.
Given the widespread criticism, it’s likely that the folks over at Pinterest have taken note of it already. However, it’s unclear whether the platform will consider bringing back the swipe functionality. Feel free to share your thoughts on this change in the comments section below.
