The limited-time feature also lets players swap the PS5 bootup animation for the iconic PS1 startup, complete with its memorable sound effects.
While fans have embraced these features with open arms, the “limited-time” label has sparked frustration. A petition launched by PlayStation enthusiast Otis O on December 2 is gaining traction, urging Sony to leave the 30th-anniversary options as a permanent addition. This petition has garnered almost 2,000 signatures at the time of writing. In fact, multiple posts on Reddit have thousands of interactions, indicating just how serious fans are about this.
Many argue that these features don’t interfere with console functionality and bring joy to longtime PlayStation fans.
“I was trippin’ so hard when my PS5 reset and the PS1 startup screen played,” one Reddit user shared. Others chimed in, reminiscing about the nostalgic charm and calling the feature one of the PS5’s best updates.
The petition has really struck a chord on social media, with fans buzzing about the nostalgia but also slamming Sony for capping the fun. One user vented, “Damnit Sony, STOP LIMITING THE COOL STUFF EVERYONE WANTS.” Another chimed in, “We got to keep the 20th-anniversary theme on the PS4. Why not this?”
Some players have suggested compromises, like keeping the themes exclusive to anniversary-edition consoles or allowing them to be purchased as permanent upgrades. “It would also be neat for an option for the classic startup,” one fan noted.
Despite the pushback, Sony has yet to comment on whether the features will remain after the limited-time period ends. In the meantime, fans are rallying around the petition in hopes of getting the gaming giant to reconsider.
