Microsoft has removed Powershell 2.0 completely from the latest preview build of Windows 11. In a recent blog aimed at Windows Insiders, the company announced the rollout of Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27891 to the Canary Channel, and as part of that announcement, it was revealed that Powershell 2.0 has been removed.

Here’s the relevant excerpt from the blog post:

Windows PowerShell 2.0 is deprecated and in the most current Insider Preview builds flighted to the Canary Channel, is removed. More information will be shared in the coming months on the removal of Windows PowerShell 2.0 in an upcoming update for Windows 11

As you can see, Microsoft intends to release more info on this matter as and when this change makes its way into the next stable release.

It’s worth noting that a reminder regarding this change was posted last month on the company’s support page titled ‘Deprecated features for Windows client‘.

In case you aren’t aware, the original announcement regarding the deprecation was made by Microsoft way back in 2017. At that time, the company had said:

We do not currently have a timeline to remove Windows PowerShell 2.0, but as we continue to evaluate its usage in the PowerShell ecosystem, we will be working to remove it in a future release.

The long delay in removal has likely been because of extensive dependency on Powershell 2.0. However, now, it looks like Microsoft has gotten rid of all those dependencies, and is ready to release a Powershell 2.0-free stable Windows build.

This removal should not impact most of the end users as most apps and scripts must already be using higher (and more secure) versions of Powershell like 5.0 or higher. However, if there’s still any third party software dependent on Powershell 2.0, the developer will have to make the necessary tweaks.

For those interested, Microsoft’s blog (wherein this Powershell 2.0 deprecation announcement was made) also contains more info, like an improvement to Microsoft Store, which now allows you to install apps and games directly from the top featured sections of the homepages.
