Last night, fans in the RuneScape community erupted in anger after news broke that Mod Jack, a long-time lead game designer, was apparently let go by Jagex. He had been with the company since 2010 and was known for shaping many of the game’s most iconic updates. Players took to Reddit to express disbelief and frustration. One of the top posts read as pure outrage.

Here’s a screenshot of that post, in case it gets deleted:

That comment captured the mood of a large section of the player base. He went on to say he was cancelling his membership after two decades of playing. Another user, Dennorak25, pointed out what many felt was a lack of transparency. They wrote that the way Jagex “snuck” the news into a regular update post made the whole process seem even more disrespectful.

Mod Jack was the mind behind big updates like the Troll Warzone and Clan Camp. He also crafted the Order of Ascension and dug deep into the lore with the Second Age storyline. Fans even got a treat with his comic, “The Empty Throne.” To many, Mod Jack wasn’t just a developer. He was a cornerstone of RuneScape’s soul.

The number of posts about the incident on RuneScape’s subbreddit makes it aptly clear that the community is angry. Some argued that Mod Jack’s departure was part of a larger cost-cutting move by Jagex’s parent company. Others blamed management for failing to keep hold of creative talent.

In parallel, a separate issue has been plaguing players who rely on the mobile app. Samsung users in particular have reported that the app crashes instantly after the loading screen. Screens go black while music still plays.

Many have tried clearing cache and reinstalling with no luck. A post from a player using a Galaxy S24 FE said simply that they hear the login music but cannot see anything beyond a black screen. One post about the issue received dozens of replies from others facing the same problem. Players on Samsung S23 and S24 models are stuck without mobile access even though the app works fine on other phones and on iOS.

Jagex apparently acknowledged the problem in a support ticket but gave no firm timeline for a fix.

Together, these two stories highlight a rocky week for RuneScape fans. On one hand, they see a respected designer shown the door. On the other, a technical glitch renders their phones useless for playing the game they love. Some fear this is a sign of deeper trouble at Jagex after recent cost-cutting measures. Others still hope that player backlash will prompt swift responses on both fronts.
