It seems like some Samsung users noticed that the company might have intentionally disabled the OLED burn-in protection on their devices. If you’re not familiar, burn-in is when static images, like the battery icon or status bar, sit on your OLED screen too long and leave a faint, permanent mark. It’s annoying because it can mess up how your phone looks and even hurt its resale value. Samsung’s burn-in protection is supposed to stop this by slightly shifting those static elements or tweaking their brightness over time.
Here’s the thing — Samsung has a history of flipping this feature on and off with software updates. It was working fine in One UI 5, then got quietly turned off in One UI 6.0. People noticed and complained, so Samsung brought it back in One UI 6.1. But now, with One UI 6.1.1 and the One UI 7 beta, users are seeing signs that it might be off again. Or is it? That’s where things get tricky.
Recently, one user (u/Nice-Regret-9207) took to Reddit to highlight that they used SetEdit and noticed the burn-in protection value was set to “0,” which usually means it’s disabled.
But here’s the twist — when users took screenshots and compared them, the status bar icons still moved a little. User u/batmazboi posted screenshots showing the battery icon shifting positions on One UI 6.1.1, even with the setting at “0.” Another user, u/md_rayan, saw the same thing on their S23 Ultra, saying, “It doesn’t overlap, which means it’s working.”
Here’s a screenshot for reference:
So, what’s going on? It looks like the protection is still doing its job, even if the setting says otherwise. This happened before in One UI 6, where Samsung called it a reporting bug and later fixed it. Chances are, we’re seeing the same glitch now. The feature seems to be active, just not showing up correctly in the settings.
For now, it seems you don’t need to panic. The feature is working as intended and will protect your phone’s screen from burn-ins as best it can. In case you discover that the feature isn’t actually working and have proof of the same, feel free to let us know so we can spread the word. Thanks in advance!
In the meantime, you can look out for the stable One UI 7.0 update that should be rolling out to your device in the next few weeks.
