Multiple X users are reporting widespread login problems and issues accessing direct messages on the social media platform. The problems appear to have started several hours ago and are affecting both the mobile app and web versions of the service.

Users attempting to log into their accounts are encountering error messages including “Oops, something went wrong. Please try again later” and “Something isn’t right, try again later.” The issues seem particularly pronounced on mobile devices, with many reporting they can only access X through web browsers like Safari or Chrome.

Just for reference, I’m able to use X on Android, iOS, and the web. Similarly, many others on X don’t seem to be facing the problem either. So not everyone is affected. That said, the direct message functionality has also been severely impacted. Several users say their DMs aren’t loading properly or showing up at all. One user explained they deleted and reinstalled the app hoping to fix their DM problems, only to find themselves completely locked out of their account afterward.

“I uninstalled Twitter so it would hopefully fix my DMs not showing up, but now the app won’t let me login,” wrote one affected user on Reddit. “I can login on Chrome but not the app.”

The login troubles extend beyond just password issues. Some users report that even two-factor authentication codes aren’t working properly. So they still can’t access their accounts despite entering correct verification information.

Many users initially thought they had been hacked when they encountered the login problems. One person described how their screen went black and kept refreshing, prompting them to reset their password as a precaution. However, they were able to receive the password reset email, indicating the problem likely stems from X’s servers rather than individual account compromises.

Some have found temporary workarounds by using private browsing modes or different web browsers, though these solutions don’t restore full functionality.

While X hasn’t acknowledged the login or DM issues, a few hours ago they did confirm that they were aware of “performance issues” due to “a data center outage.” So it’s possible that these problems are a result of the ongoing data center outage. The company hasn’t yet shared a status update regarding the outage, so affected users might just have to wait until the problem is resolved.

We’ll keep track of the situation and will post an update if and when there’s something to share.
