Spotify crashing on S24 ultra

Many Spotify users with Android smartphones are reporting that the app is acting up today. Reports online suggest that the app suddenly crashes when users try to access the “Now Playing” screen. This screen, which typically shows the album art, playback controls, lyrics, and the song queue, has become a trigger for app instability for many.
The problem doesn’t seem to be isolated to a specific device or Android version. Users have taken to Reddit and Spotify’s own community forums to share their experience. From Samsung Galaxy devices like the S20, S22, S23, and S24 series to OnePlus, Motorola, and Pixel phones, the complaint is consistent: tapping on the currently playing song bar at the bottom of the app causes an immediate crash.
Someone shared a screen recording of the problem on Reddit. Check it out below:
I tried to replicate the issue on a Pixel 8 with Spotify version 9.0.44.478, but I couldn’t get the app to crash in my brief testing. I was able to access the Now Playing view and use all the features without any hiccups. So it’s unclear what might be causing the problem at the moment.
Many affected users have diligently tried the usual troubleshooting steps. These include clearing the app’s cache and data, reinstalling Spotify from both the Google Play Store and proprietary app stores like the Galaxy Store, and restarting their devices. Unfortunately, these efforts have largely been in vain, with the app continuing to crash when trying to expand the Now Playing interface.

Some reports suggest the issue might be linked to a recent app update. One user noted that a specific newer version of the app seems to be problematic, while an older version on a different device was working correctly. This has led to speculation that a bug may have been introduced in the latest release. But again, I wasn’t able to replicate the problem with the latest update available on the Play Store for me.
While users can still play music, the inability to access the full player view significantly hampers the experience, preventing them from easily managing their queue, viewing lyrics, or accessing other related features.
Given the fact that this is a widespread issue, it’s likely that we’ll see a fix arrive sooner rather than later. We’ll keep track of the situation and will update the article if and when there are any further developments. In case you found a workaround, feel free to share it below to help others. Thanks in advance!
