Update (June 6, 2024)
3.10 pm (IST): Spotify says this issue should be fixed in v8.9.34 and newer versions, so be sure to update to this version. However, some people are still reporting issues with the updated versions, so hopefully Spotify rolls out further improvements in future.
Original article from April 29 follows:
Spotify users have been facing issues with the collaborative playlist feature that lets users collaborate with their friends to add, remove, or even reorder songs in a playlist. Reports have been popping up on the official Spotify support forums, Reddit, and X for a few days. I’ve added a few complaints from users below for reference:
My friend and I have been trying to make a playlist together for the past few days and for some reason the second person cannot add songs after getting the collaborator invite. We’ve tried going through our settings, sending the link through different apps, resetting the app, and nothing has worked. Any recommendations as to how to fix this? (Source)
@Spotify why doesn’t my collaborative playlist link work?? It just takes my friends to the playlist but no option to accept the invite, same for me. (Source)
I have tried with 3 friends 3 different accounts multiple different playlists with different ways of copying and sending the invite collaborator link and they do not work. The link just simply takes you to the playlist itself and just lets you view it. It does not actually invite you and you cannot join and add songs. This has been a problem previously and is marked as resolved but it seems the issue is back. This is being tried on IOS and has also been tried on windows and the same result has occurred. (Source)
From what I managed to gather after reading dozens of comments on various platforms, it appears that the invite links are botched. For instance, once users tap on the ‘Invite collaborators’ button and share the link to the playlist, the recipient simply cannot join the playlist. The link does lead the person to the shared playlist, but there’s no option to join it as a collaborator. The link is bugged no matter which app you choose to send it through.
Notably, affected users have tried joining the playlist on the web version, iOS app, Mac app, and even the Windows version. I didn’t spot any reports from users with Android phones, however, it’s possible that the issue is present there too. Affected users also tried basic troubleshooting steps like clearing the app’s cache as well as uninstalling the app and reinstalling it, but none of this helped.
Luckily, the folks over at Spotify haven’t turned a blind eye to the reports. The main thread about the problem now has over 540 upvotes from users indicating that they too are facing the same problem. Spotify’s team has confirmed that the issue is currently under investigation, but there’s no ETA for a fix.
Hey everyone,
We’ve received some reports from users who have issues joining and inviting other users to collaborative playlists.
This is being investigated.
At the time of this writing, I couldn’t find any concrete evidence of any workarounds for the problem. So you might have to wait for Spotify to release a fix for the bug before you can continue inviting friends to collaborate on playlists. That said, I’ll keep track of any official developments on the matter and will post an update if something worth sharing comes up. In case you discovered a workaround, feel free to share it in the comments section below. Thanks in advance!
