Spotify users on desktop are finding themselves stuck in a playback speed rut, unable to adjust the pace of their favorite podcasts. The issue, which seems to have arisen after a recent update to the Spotify app for both Windows and Mac, leaves listeners trapped at their last used speed setting, whether it’s a snail-paced 0.5x or a hyper-speed 3.5x.

Frustrated users have taken to Reddit, X and Spotify’s community forums with complaints, highlighting the inconvenience of being unable to tailor their listening experience. While the bug primarily affects the desktop app with some dotted cases of web users affected too, it’s a significant annoyance for those who prefer to listen to podcasts on their computers.

Spotify has acknowledged the issue, confirming that they’re receiving reports of the playback speed being “stuck” on the desktop app and web player. The company hasn’t provided a timeline for a fix, leaving users with the unsatisfying option of either enduring their current speed setting or switching to the mobile app for the time being.

Some users have reported temporary success by completely uninstalling and reinstalling the app, but the problem seems to resurface quickly. For now, it appears the only reliable workaround is to use Spotify on a different platform until the company resolves the desktop app issue.

While the playback speed bug is undoubtedly frustrating, it’s a reminder that even the most popular apps aren’t immune to glitches. In the meantime, podcast enthusiasts can find solace in the fact that their favorite shows are still accessible, even if they have to listen at an unexpected pace.
