Spotify is looking into a problem with its app on Volvo and Polestar vehicles. Drivers have been reporting issues ever since a recent update messed things up. For many, this has turned their daily commutes into a frustrating experience without their favorite tunes.

These cars run on Android Automotive OS, which lets apps like Spotify integrate right into the infotainment system. Normally, this setup makes it easy and safe to control music while driving. But after the update, things went off track. Some folks say the Google Voice Assistant can’t control Spotify anymore. Others have noticed the app’s interface looks different, and it’s not as driver-friendly as it used to be.

One user summed it up: “The app has moved to the section where the games and map apps are and is greyed out while driving.” Another pointed out a possible reason, saying, “It appears Spotify has defaulted to desktop mode rather than the intended Android Automotive OS (AAOS) car mode.” This shift might explain why the app feels clunky and out of place in the car.

People have been trying to fix it themselves. Uninstalling and reinstalling the app is a common step, but it hasn’t worked for everyone. “I’ve literally tried everything and it’s not my car’s issue, started after that January update,” one frustrated user shared. There’s a workaround floating around — uninstall the app from every car user profile, restart the system, and reinstall it. Some say it brings back the normal app, while others still have no luck.

Spotify knows about the issue and is working on it. They’ve told users to keep an eye on updates and try the workaround for now. This glitch shows how tricky it can be to keep apps and car systems in sync, especially for something as popular as music streaming during a drive.

While waiting for a fix, some drivers are switching to Bluetooth from their phones. It’s not as smooth as the built-in app, though. Spotify has promised to keep everyone posted as they dig into the problem. For now, Volvo and Polestar owners are hoping for a quick solution to get their music flowing again. If you’re dealing with this, give the workaround a shot and check back for updates.
