Many Spotify users are stunned (not in a good way) to find out that their beloved lyrics button has mysteriously vanished from the desktop app. The feature that once provided quick access to song lyrics with a single click has been relocated and seemingly made more complicated to use.

The change affects the Windows desktop application specifically, where the lyrics button previously appeared in the bottom toolbar alongside other playback controls. Now, users must navigate to the “Now Playing” sidebar to access lyrics, which many describe as clunky and inconvenient. Check the screenshot below for reference:

What’s particularly annoying users is that the lyrics don’t stay visible when songs change. Previously, once you opened lyrics, they would remain displayed as you moved through your playlist. Now, every new song requires manually reopening the lyrics view, which has turned what was once a seamless experience into a repetitive chore.

“Previously, you could access the lyrics by simply clicking an icon and now you gotta go through some Hulu-esque stuff to see them. It looks ugly and feels completely impractical,” complained one user on Spotify’s community forums.

The feature appears to be rolling out as part of a gradual update, not affecting all users simultaneously. Some people still have the traditional lyrics button on their web player, while others using the same version of the desktop app have lost it entirely. This suggests Spotify may be testing the change with select users before a wider rollout.

As with any big change, users aren’t happy with it, and some are calling for the company to revert the change, arguing that it solves a problem that didn’t exist.

Some tech-savvy users have found workarounds using third-party tools like Spicetify, which allows customization of the Spotify interface and can restore lyrics functionality. However, most users are hoping Spotify will listen to feedback and reverse the change.
