Update (June 6, 2024)
3.15 pm (IST): According to Spotify, this issue with Echo devices should not be resolved for everyone affected, but make sure your Echo devices are all up to date.
Original article from April 30 follows:
If you are looking for a way to fix the annoying glitch where Alexa stops playing music from Spotify on your Amazon Echo devices, then you’ve come to the right place. After reading several dozen complaints and posts about the problem, I’ve rounded up a couple of workarounds that should fix the issue. These workarounds were recommended by users themselves who claim that the steps helped fix the issue. So without wasting much time, let’s check out the workarounds.
Workarounds to fix Spotify music playback glitch on Echo devices
The first recommended workaround is to unlink your Spotify account from the Alexa app. To do this, follow the steps below:
- Launch the Alexa app.
- In the bottom-right corner, tap the more icon.
- Select “Settings” from the menu.
- Scroll down and tap “Music & Podcasts”.
- Choose “Spotify” from the list of services.
- You’ll see an option to “Disable Skill”. Tap that.
- Once disabled, tap “Enable Skill” to reconnect your Spotify account.
After you link your Spotify account to Alexa again, go ahead and try playing some music tracks to see if the playback stops on your Amazon Echo devices. If this doesn’t help fix the problem, then try rebooting your router/modem. One user claims that doing this helped them address the bug. In fact, I’d suggest performing both workarounds in conjunction to see if it helps fix the problem.
You can also check if there’s an update available. I stumbled upon a recent comment for an individual who claims they asked Alexa if an update was available and installed it. After installing the update, the bug was fixed, according to the user.
So chrisd and me was one of the first ppl who encountered the Problem, since yesterday evening the problem should be solved on my side. What did i done? I asks Alexa yesterday if there is an update and she tells me yes after 10 Minutes the update was done and guess who is playing his sleepmusic the whole night? So for everyone here just give at a try maybe the solution is right here.
So it’s possible that a bug-fixing update has begun rolling out in batches. I just couldn’t find more evidence that suggests this new update is rolling out widely.
User reports and Spotify’s statement
This bug seems to have popped up at least around two weeks ago and I still see reports coming in on platforms like the official Spotify forums, Reddit, and X. According to user reports, when they ask Alexa to play music via their Spotify accounts, the music plays for a few minutes but then stops automatically. Some users initially suspected that the problem might be tied to ads on Spotify, however, that was quickly dismissed. The bug persists no matter if you’re on the free tier or premium, so blaming it on ads is out of the question.
Luckily, the folks over at Spotify are now aware of the problem and have confirmed that they are working on a fix. Here’s the official statement:
While there’s no ETA for a fix, you can expect to see it go live sooner rather than later. That said, if you found this article helpful, please consider tapping that like button. In case you figured out another workaround, feel free to share it in the comments section below. Thanks in advance!

I had the same Issue. Actually, switching off & on again the router & all wifi connected echo devices solved the problem. Alexa does not stop playback of music anymore. (July 2024)
