Supercell has just dropped a bomb on its Clash of Clans player base. In a move that has left almost everyone fuming, or at least annoyed, the game developer decided to automatically change Supercell ID usernames for a significant number of players. And the kicker? Players who found their decades-old, cherished names altered are now discovering they can’t even change them back to what they were. Talk about a rude awakening.

Imagine logging into your favorite game, ready to raid some villages or upgrade your Town Hall, only to find your familiar username replaced by something completely new and, for many, utterly random. That is exactly what happened to countless Clash of Clans enthusiasts. For years, players have associated their Supercell IDs with specific usernames, some holding sentimental value, others simply being concise and easy to manage, especially for those with multiple accounts. Now, those names are gone, swapped out for auto-generated monikers that often combine an adjective with a noun, or even append parts of their old username to create a clunky new one.

One player, who went by “Ruby” for years across their alternate accounts, expressed their frustration in a post on Reddit. Their simple and classic name was suddenly changed, leaving them stuck with a new, unwelcome tag. “What kind of practice is this?” they asked, highlighting the sudden and unannounced nature of the change. They weren’t alone, hundreds of users also share the same frustration, with some even initially believing their accounts had been hacked due to the unexpected alteration.

It seems Supercell implemented a “unique username” feature, but did so in the most bewildering way possible. Instead of giving players a heads-up or an option to choose their unique name, they just went ahead and changed them. The company put out a post, almost as an afterthought, stating that the changes were “normal” and that they had “generated one based on your in-game name.” They also casually mentioned that players could change it “here,” but then added a stark warning: “Choose wisely—once you pick a new name you can’t change it back!”

This warning is what truly stings for many. Not only were their original names forcibly taken, but now if they try to revert to them, they’re often told the name is “already taken” — presumably by the very system that just changed it. It’s a classic catch-22. Players feel like they’re being forced to use their one free name change to fix a problem Supercell created, potentially leaving them in a lurch if they ever genuinely wanted to change their name in the future.

“I thought I had been hacked too,” shared one user, highlighting the initial panic this update caused. Another added, “Ya not a fan of this, at least let us choose the ‘unique’ name.” The overwhelming consensus among the community is that while unique usernames might be a good idea for security in the long run, the implementation was a complete misfire. A simple pop-up offering players the chance to choose their new unique name would have saved a lot of headaches and anger. Instead, Supercell decided to just spring it on everyone, leaving a trail of confused and irritated Chiefs in its wake.
