The Sims 4 community is finding itself stuck in a nightmare this week as EA’s latest update on August 19 turned what should have been an exciting feature rollout into another game-breaking disaster. The update, which introduced the long-awaited Pack Selection feature allowing players to disable specific expansion packs, has left countless players unable to access their saves or even load into Live Mode properly.
The Pack Selection feature itself appears fundamentally broken. Players attempting to disable all packs and then re-enable them are getting stuck in infinite loading screens, with the game hanging indefinitely while trying to process the changes. Content creator LilSimsie documented this exact issue and posted a video on it:
The technical problems run much deeper than just the new feature, though. According to modder Spinning Plumb Bobs, EA made changes to core game code that now causes any mod using certain injection scripts to immediately kick players back to the world selection screen. This affects a massive range of popular modifications, from UI overhauls like the main menu mod to gameplay additions that rely on script injections to function.
Zerbu, creator of the widely-used Mod Constructor tool, explained that the issue stems from new Pack Selection code being inserted into a critical line that many mods hook into. This means mods that add interactions to Sims or alter existing game objects are particularly vulnerable to breaking. The ripple effect has been severe, with players reporting they can’t even access Live Mode with their usual mod setups installed.
Workarounds do exist, but they’re not ideal solutions. Meanwhile, mod creators are also rushing to release compatibility updates, with Zerbu already pushing out fixes for Mod Constructor-based modifications.
If you still want to play before mod creators update their mods, you can simply delete all your mods and start the game. At least one user confirmed that doing this got the game up and running for them.
That said, this isn’t the first time players have run into problems with mods following an update. Previous patches have also broken mods on several occasions. But mod creators usually do the needful to get things back up and running. So expect mods to work as usual in the coming days, if not already.
