Threads users might soon have a way to break free from their Instagram ties. A new setting spotted in the iOS app lets people delete their current profile and start fresh with just an email or phone number. This could be a game-changer for anyone who’s been frustrated by the apps’ tight connection.
The discovery comes from Radu Oncescu, who shared screenshots on X and Reddit. In the images, the option appears under account settings. It explains that choosing this path means your Instagram details like username, bio, and followers won’t carry over. No more personalized ads or content based on your Instagram activity. But there’s a catch. Your existing Threads profile gets hidden right away, and everything vanishes for good after 30 days.
Threads launched back in July 2023 as Meta’s answer to X. It quickly hit over 100 million users by pulling in Instagram accounts for easy signups. That link helped it grow fast, but it also drew complaints. Privacy worries popped up, especially about data sharing between the apps. Some folks also didn’t like how deleting their Threads account could mess with their Instagram; however, that was addressed shortly after
Plus, in May this year, there were reports about Meta testing a new signup option to create an account on Threads without Instagram. Now, this new option in the app makes it seem like Meta is making it easier for people to unlink their Instagram accounts and use Threads afresh.
While I do not see the setting on my end, it’s possible that it only shows up for users in Europe. But that’s only speculation on my part. If you’re checking your settings and it’s not there, hang tight. It might show up soon.
Why make this move now? Threads has grown to over 200 million monthly users, but it’s still chasing X’s engagement. Cutting the Instagram cord could draw in people who avoid Meta’s photo app. Think of professionals or those wanting a cleaner social space. It fits with recent updates like DMs and fediverse integration, showing Threads wants to stand on its own.
Meta hasn’t commented about this new setting officially. If this sticks, it could reshape how people use the platform. For now, if you’re ready to start over, keep an eye on those settings. Threads might just become a bit more independent.
