Music streaming service TIDAL has announced it will discontinue support for Samsung Smart TVs starting July 8, 2024. This decision marks the end of a partnership that began in 2018 when TIDAL first launched its app for Samsung’s Smart TV platform.

According to an email sent to subscribers, TIDAL users will no longer be able to access the service directly through their Samsung Smart TV apps after the cutoff date. This move affects all Samsung Smart TV models that currently support the TIDAL app. Check out a screenshot of the email shared by a user on Reddit.

The discontinuation of Samsung TV support is part of a broader trend for TIDAL. In recent months, the company has also removed its apps from other streaming devices, including Amazon Fire TV and Roku. This suggests a shift in TIDAL’s strategy regarding smart TV and streaming device support.

TIDAL is advising affected users to access the service through alternative means, such as:

  • Logging in via computer browser
  • Using the TIDAL mobile app
  • Casting content from mobile devices to TVs using Chromecast or Bluetooth
  • Exploring other compatible streaming devices

While the native TV app will no longer function, Samsung TV owners can still enjoy TIDAL’s extensive music library and high-quality audio streams through these alternative methods.

The decision has sparked discussion among TIDAL’s user base, with some expressing disappointment, particularly regarding the loss of easy access to TIDAL’s video content and playlists on their TVs. However, TIDAL maintains that the overall listening experience will not be compromised for those who adapt to other playback methods.

This change comes amid other significant updates from TIDAL. The company recently announced its complete transition to the lossless FLAC audio format, moving away from MQA tracks by July 24, 2024. This shift emphasizes TIDAL’s continued focus on high-quality audio streaming, even as it adjusts its device support strategy.

TIDAL, known for its high-fidelity audio streaming and artist-centric approach, was launched in 2014 and has since positioned itself as a premium option for audiophiles and music enthusiasts. Despite facing stiff competition from larger platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, TIDAL has maintained its niche with a focus on sound quality and exclusive content.

For users affected by this change, TIDAL recommends visiting their official website for the most up-to-date information on supported devices and alternative streaming methods. The company also encourages subscribers to reach out to their customer support team for personalized assistance in transitioning to other playback options.

As the streaming landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how this decision will impact TIDAL’s user base and market position in the long term.
