It seems like TikTok has started rolling out the dislike button for viewers to tap if they don’t like a particular video in their feed. It’s plopped right there next to the like, comments, bookmark, and share buttons on the right side.
The feature isn’t exactly new since it has been in testing for over ten months, from what I was able to gather. As with any new feature, it hasn’t been met with universal acclaim. Many users have expressed frustration with the new feature, with some calling for its removal altogether. One Reddit user shared their annoyance, stating that the “not interested” button was perfectly fine, and complained about accidentally hitting dislike instead of favorites due to muscle memory.
This sentiment is echoed across social media platforms, where users are voicing their surprise and displeasure. “Why does TikTok have that dislike button now? Why not put it on Twitter instead?” questioned one user. Another simply demanded, “Why is there a dislike button on TikTok? GET RID OF IT.” The confusion suggests TikTok may be implementing a staggered rollout across its massive user base.
Luckily for creators, the dislike button doesn’t have a counter. So it seems that the button will most likely act as a metric for the algorithm to understand what content users don’t want to watch.
The dislike button isn’t a novel concept in social media. YouTube has employed a similar feature for years, though its visibility and functionality have changed over time. Whether TikTok’s implementation will prove successful or face continued resistance remains to be seen as more users gain access to the feature.
