TikTok users around the world started their day with an unexpected surprise yesterday. A pop-up notification appeared on their apps, warning them that their accounts were posing as someone else in a confusing way. The message read something like this, “We found that your account is posing as another person or organisation in a confusing way. As a result, your account will not be recommended to others. You can edit your profile or submit an appeal, if you believe this was a mistake.” Options to edit the profile, appeal, or learn more sat right below it.

Here’s a screenshot of the pop-up for reference:

At first glance, it looked like a standard policy enforcement. But soon enough, complaints flooded Reddit. People who had never tried to mimic celebrities, brands, or anyone else were getting flagged. Regular folks with personal accounts, some barely active, found themselves in the crosshairs. One asked, “Both me and my friend got this notice, there is nobody on my profile but myself and my crochet plushies. I drew my own logo, and I have like 1k followers and like 20 likes on each post- what is this?”

The confusion quickly spread to platforms like Reddit and X, where threads popped up with screenshots of the same notification. Users swapped stories, trying to figure out if it was a targeted crackdown or something bigger. Many worried their accounts might get shadowbanned or hidden from feeds, hurting visibility for creators or just everyday posters. Some attempted appeals, only to hit dead ends or app crashes. Others clicked edit and saw no real changes needed, like altered bios or photos that weren’t there.

It didn’t take long for word to spread that this might be a glitch. In one Reddit thread, a user urged everyone to hold off on changes, calling it a widespread app problem affecting tons of people in a short time. They figured it would sort itself out soon, and messing with profiles could make things worse unnecessarily.

Over on X, the frustration echoed. One poster described the notification looping back, with the app crashing every time they tried to fix it. They weren’t sure if their content was even showing up anymore.

This keeps showing up on my tiktok, and every time I try to press edit profile or appeal, the app crashes. I’m not even sure if my account is still visible or I’m banned or something 😭

In the meantime, a few workarounds have surfaced in discussions. Some suggest logging out, deleting and reinstalling the app, then logging back in to tweak the profile lightly. Others recommend just waiting it out, as past bugs have fixed themselves within hours. If you’re hit by this, it might be smart to appeal through the app if it doesn’t crash, or reach out to TikTok support.

For now, the best bet is staying calm and avoiding drastic changes until more details emerge. With millions on the platform, issues like this highlight how a small hiccup can ripple out fast. Hopefully, TikTok clears it up soon, so users can get back to scrolling without the extra stress.
