Update 30/08/24 10:08 am (IST): A fresh workaround shared on Reddit seems to be doing the trick for multiple users. Apparently, all you need to do is change your status to invisible, then online, back to invisible and switch to online again. It’s a weird trick, but reports suggest it does the job. So give it a go and let us know if it worked for you in the comments below.
Original article published on August 29, 2024, follows:
Many Discord users are reporting that they are unable to change their profile pictures on the platform. This issue comes on the heels of recent latency problems that plagued the app, leaving users wondering if the two incidents are related.
The profile picture problem seems to have cropped up shortly after Discord resolved an “Increased API Latency” incident that lasted for several hours on August 27. During that time, users experienced degraded performance across various features, including message sending and other API endpoints. While Discord’s team successfully mitigated those issues, it appears that a new bug has emerged in its wake.
Across social media platforms, Discord users have been voicing their frustrations. One user, complained, “Bruh. All I wanted to do was change my pfp to match my bf #discord.” Another user, expressed their annoyance in all caps: “BROOO DISCORD WON’T LET ME CHANGE MY PFP.”
The issue doesn’t seem to be limited to a specific platform or device. Users have reported encountering the problem on both mobile and desktop versions of Discord. Some users are receiving an “Unknown Session” error or “There was a problem updating your profile” message when attempting to update their profile picture, while others simply find that their changes aren’t saving. Here’s a screenshot that was shared on Reddit for reference:
Discord has yet to officially acknowledge the problem or provide any guidance on when a fix might be available. This lack of communication has left many users feeling frustrated and in the dark about the status of their accounts.
The timing of this bug, coming so soon after the latency issues, has led some users to speculate about a possible connection between the two events. However, without official word from Discord, it’s impossible to say whether the profile picture problem is a direct result of the fixes implemented for the latency issue or an unrelated bug.
For now, Discord users are left with little choice but to wait it out. Some have taken to changing their display names or status messages as temporary workarounds to express themselves in lieu of updating their profile pictures. Nonetheless, it’s likely that we’ll see a quick-fix for the issue go live sooner rather than later. So hang in there!
