A secret way to make your Waymo wait for you longer might be “fixed” soon.
Macy Mills posted the hack on X with just a picture of the trunk open on a Waymo taxi and the caption: “Life hack for making your Waymo wait for you.”
The post drew in a few thousand eyeballs; however, one of those eyeballs was from a Waymo engineer named Reed. They dropped a comment saying, “ugh now I have to fix this.”
Mills jumped in right away. “Please don’t !!!!!”
The trick itself isn’t brand new. Back in March 2025, rideshare analyst Harry Campbell slipped the same tip into his newsletter, The Driverless Digest. Move your pickup pin before the car arrives, he wrote, and you buy a few extra minutes. Once it shows up, pop the trunk, and it hangs around longer. “You’re welcome,” he added at the time.
Campbell himself replied to Mills’ post with a quick “yes!!” and a link back to his original note. Other riders piled on. One said he used to do it until school and geography got in the way.
Other riders also jumped in the comments. Some admitted they’ve been quietly doing the same thing for months. Others begged her to delete the post so Waymo wouldn’t patch it. One joked she was the kid who reminded the teacher about homework.
The replies show how people are still learning the robotaxi’s quirks. An open trunk apparently signals “still loading luggage,” so the car sits tight instead of starting its usual short countdown.
For now the hack still works. But after this thread blew up to nearly 9,000 views in hours, Reed might not have much choice.
