Waze has long been a go-to app for drivers who want real-time traffic updates and a heads-up on road hazards. Its community of users and map editors has kept it thriving, reporting everything from potholes to traffic jams. But for iOS users, one feature has been a headache for over a year: Google Assistant. Now, Waze is pulling the plug on it and bringing in something new.

The trouble with Google Assistant on Waze for iOS started more than a year ago. Users found it glitchy and unreliable, making hands-free navigation and incident reporting a hassle. Frustration grew, and Waze heard the complaints loud and clear. Instead of tinkering with a broken system, the company decided to scrap Google Assistant on iOS entirely, according to an announcement. Android users don’t need to worry — Google Assistant will keep working smoothly on their devices.

In its place, Waze is rolling out a Gemini-based conversational reporting system. This isn’t just a quick fix — it’s a big step up. The new feature, already in beta testing with trusted users, lets drivers report road issues by talking naturally. No more fumbling with specific voice commands. You can just say, “There’s a crash up ahead,” and Waze gets it. If more details are needed, the app might even ask, “Can you tell me more about the crash?” This back-and-forth makes reporting easier and keeps drivers’ eyes on the road.

The switch is happening fast. Google Assistant on iOS is being phased out now, and the Gemini-based system will take over soon. Waze hasn’t set an exact date for the full release, but it’s likely coming to iOS users worldwide after the beta wraps up.

This isn’t Waze’s only recent upgrade. The app has been busy adding features like school zone alerts, which warn drivers to slow down near schools. It’s all part of Waze’s push to blend community input with smart tech. For iOS users, ditching Google Assistant for this conversational tool means a smoother, safer way to share what’s happening on the road. Soon, they’ll be chatting with Waze like an old friend — and helping everyone else get around a little better too.
