WhatsApp seems to be having a tough time with a basic part of the app — its colors. I’m seeing reports pop up on Reddit and X from users who say that their WhatsApp theme has changed from green to blue all of a sudden. Then, there’s another set of users who claim that their chat colors have reset to green, and they can’t even find the option to change the chat color again.

The shift from the familiar green to blue has certainly caught a lot of eyes. It makes you wonder what’s going on behind the scenes at WhatsApp. Is this a deliberate design tweak that only rolled out to a few? Or is it a widespread bug affecting different versions of the app? There are even reports from users who have WhatsApp Business accounts who say the color changed to blue for them.

Meanwhile, another group of users is experiencing a different kind of color chaos. Their customized chat bubble colors, which could be anything from calming grey to vibrant purple, have suddenly reverted to the default green. And to make things more frustrating, the option to change these colors seems to have vanished entirely for them. Imagine setting up your chat to match your phone’s aesthetic, only for it to randomly switch back. It’s like hitting a reset button without your permission.

One user on Reddit expressed their frustration, saying, “I had mine this light purple to match my pretty background. Now it clashes.” Another user shared a similar experience, “my chat color bubble suddenly got switched back to green this morning.” It seems many users enjoyed the personalization WhatsApp offered with chat colors. This sudden removal, or at least the inability to change them, is a real letdown for some.

I tried replicating both issues on an Android device as well as on iOS, but couldn’t. I still have the option to change the chat color theme and the app’s overall theme is still green.

Interestingly, some users are finding a temporary fix for the chat bubble issue. A few have reported that simply force-closing the app and reopening it brings back their chosen chat color and the option to change it. This suggests it might indeed be a software glitch rather than a planned removal of features. However, there is no similar quick fix reported for the users whose entire WhatsApp theme has turned blue.

Based on information online, I can speculate that it might have something to do with the fact that WhatsApp is currently tinkering with additional chat themes. As highlighted by WABetaInfo, the platform is experimenting with additional chat theme color options. So it’s possible that this might have resulted in some unwanted bugs.

The inconsistency with the bugs suggests that it might be due to A/B testing gone wrong. Either way, it shouldn’t be long before the issues are patched. So just keep an eye out for any available updates for the WhatsApp app in the coming days.

In case you figured out a workaround for the blue theme bug, feel free to share it the comments below. Thanks in advance!
