WhatsApp users have been dealing with a frustrating calling glitch lately. When they pick up an incoming call, it immediately flips to On Hold status and stays there. The Resume button apparently does nothing.

A Reddit thread that went up on March 17 has turned into a flood of similar stories. Plenty of folks say the problem kicked in around the same time and keeps happening even after they restart their phones or reinstall the app completely.

At first, it looked like a Samsung issue, popping up on models ranging from the Galaxy A13 and older S10 series to the brand new S25 Ultra. But the complaints quickly spread far beyond that. People have reported the same trouble on Pixel 4a and 5 phones, various Redmi and Poco devices, Motorola handsets, Oppo models, Sony Xperia 1 III, Asus Zenfone 8, and a bunch of others. That wide mix of brands and Android versions makes it hard to pin the blame on any single phone maker or software update.

Interestingly, outgoing WhatsApp calls usually work fine. It is only the incoming ones that turn into a headache, which is especially annoying for anyone who relies on the app for work chats or staying in touch with family.

In the thread, workarounds like turning off call waiting, disabling battery saver mode, clearing the app cache, rolling back to an older version of WhatsApp, removing call recording apps, or tweaking how their contacts are handled have been suggested. None of those fixes seems to work for everyone, though.

A handful of commenters mentioned the bug simply vanished on its own after a couple of days, which only adds to the confusion. Right now, the reports cover so many different devices that it’s clear the issue is on WhatsApp’s end rather than something tied to one phone model or update.

But it’s not just Android users dealing with issues. Yesterday, we covered another glitch that turns some video calls into black screens with colored outlines around the other person, mostly affecting iPhone users but hitting at least one Samsung owner too.

For the moment, this On Hold issue looks like another case of WhatsApp needing to sort out its own side of things, but we will have to wait for more details to be sure.
