Google Maps has recently released updates for both its stable and beta versions. However, these updates have been reported to cause crashes on Android Auto, a platform that integrates phone apps with car infotainment systems.

The stable version, v11.130.0102, and the beta version, v11.132.0100, have been identified as the culprits behind these crashes. When Android Auto is launched, the Google Maps app crashes, returning users to the Android Auto app list. Repeated attempts to select Google Maps result in further crashes. While Google hasn’t acknowledged the bug since it’s only started happening, here are a couple of workarounds to stop Android Auto from crashing when using Google Maps.

How to fix Google Maps crashing Android Auto issue

To resolve the crashing issue, users can uninstall the latest Google Maps beta updates. This will revert the app to the previous beta version, which reportedly worked without issues. It is important to note that beta releases, by nature, may contain bugs and users who opt for beta versions should be aware of potential risks.

Alternatively, users can uninstall all Google Maps updates to return to the stable version that came pre-installed on their device. This method has also been reported to fix the crashes. However, it is crucial to prevent the app from automatically re-downloading updates through the Google Play Store. Reports suggest that the latest Google Maps stable version may also have bugs, and auto-updating could reintroduce the crashing problem on Android Auto. Users should be mindful of their offline maps and ensure they are still present after uninstalling updates.

To uninstall updates, go to Settings > Apps, then select See all apps. From there, locate Google Maps in the app list and tap on the “Uninstall updates” button. This will revert Google Maps to the default version that shipped with the phone, potentially fixing the Android Auto crashes until Google releases an official solution.

Users have reported that while Google Maps functions on the phone while Android Auto is running, any interaction between the two apps triggers a crash. Voice commands through Android Auto, for example, lead to Google Maps crashing.

While Google Maps remains a valuable tool for navigation and exploration, these recent updates have caused inconvenience for users who rely on Android Auto. The company is expected to address these issues promptly and provide a stable and reliable experience for all users.
