Last night I stumbled upon a post that highlighted a screenshot where X seems to be testing integrating the ‘Today’s News’ module right into the ‘For You’ feed. Now, earlier this morning when I was scrolling through my X feed, I noticed the same section appear mid-way.
This newly added section seems to aim to bring the latest news up front and in your face, whether you like it or not (at least for now). The section highlights three news headlines with an option to see more news or head to the primary ‘Today’s News’ section.
Elon Musk has constantly been bragging about X being the number one news app in the world, so it’s not a surprise that the platform is aiming to put news front and center in the app.
What convinces me that this is still in testing is the fact that I haven’t been able to bring it up again. I’ve restarted the app multiple times but couldn’t get the ‘Today’s News’ module to load in the ‘For You’ feed.
For users like me, this could mean news is easier to find without digging for it. You’re just scrolling through your usual posts, and bam, there’s a headline. It might make staying in the loop feel effortless. But it’s not all rosy. Some folks might not want news crashing their personalized feed.
Publishers could have a lot to gain here too. More eyes on their stories could mean more clicks and traffic. Daniel Hart chimed in on this, saying if X nails the revenue share and article features, it could turn into a sweet spot for news and publishing. I agree, but like I said in the convo, I’m not holding my breath just yet. There’s still a lot X needs to figure out.
GoalRival had an interesting take, suggesting X might want to become a “closed garden” with unique content. They think it could help train their AI, Grok. It’s a cool idea — exclusive stuff could set X apart. But Daniel Hart brought up a snag: nothing’s stopping people from copying articles right now. He also mentioned needing better metrics, like what Google gives through its Search Console, to make it worth publishers’ time.
This test feels like a big step for X to flex its muscles as a news platform. Musk’s vision might be pushing it forward, but it’s going to take some serious work to keep users and publishers happy. For now, I’ll keep an eye on my feed to see if those headlines pop up again.
