YouTube users are increasingly frustrated with the surge in advertisements interrupting their viewing experience. Reports have surfaced of ads appearing as frequently as every minute during videos, a significant uptick from previous norms. This escalation coincides with YouTube’s intensified efforts to combat ad blockers, leaving viewers feeling inundated with commercials.

For months, there have been whispers about ads becoming more frequent, but now it seems the whispers have turned into shouts. Users on Reddit have been sharing their frustration, reporting ad breaks popping up every minute or so, which is a stark contrast to what they were used to. In the past 24 hours alone the r/youtube subreddit has seen a number of threads by frustrated users complaining about ads.

One user shared their ordeal of watching a 20-30 minute video only to be hit with at least six long ads, each lasting about a minute. Another user posted about a similar experience. They detailed an instance where watching a 2-hour Pokémon video meant enduring an ad every six minutes, totaling over 20 ads. And it’s not just the quantity; the quality of the viewing experience has taken a nosedive with these ads often being unskippable and lengthy, sometimes lasting 50 seconds.

This ad fest seems to be YouTube’s new strategy after they’ve been cracking down on ad blockers. The platform has been making it harder for users to watch videos without ads, and now it feels like they’re doubling down on those who don’t block ads by bombarding them instead.

The community isn’t taking this lying down. There’s talk of looking for alternatives; some users are even threatening to jump ship if this keeps up. “I’ll find content elsewhere,” one user stated, highlighting a growing discontent. Watching a video now feels more like a commercial break with occasional content rather than the other way around.

The frustration is real, and it’s not just anecdotal. Reports across the web, including Google’s support forums, mention similar experiences, with viewers joking they know more about the latest shampoo or gadget than the actual video they’re trying to watch.

YouTube might be trying to push folks towards YouTube Premium, their subscription service that promises no ads, but this approach could backfire. Instead of encouraging sign-ups, it might just drive viewers away.

The only problem here is that YouTube doesn’t really have competition. I mean, yeah, we’ve got Rumble, Dailymotion, Vimeo, and a few others, but let’s not kid ourselves. None of these “alternatives” have even half as much interesting content. Furthermore, most popular creators don’t upload to any other “YouTube alternative”. So while the ads are getting out of hand, we viewers have our backs against the wall. YouTube knows it can shove more ads down our throats because we’ve got nowhere else to go.

But hopefully, with enough backlash, the community can get the platform to tone down on the frequency of ads. Watching an ad every couple of minutes is frankly insane. And the frequency at which this seems to be occurring lately is alarming.
