Update 05/09/24: It looks like the issue was affecting v5.02.304 of the YouTube app on Android/Google TV devices and not just select Chromecast with Google TV units. But the good thing is the latest v5.02.306 update currently rolling out fixes the crashing issue.
Original article follows:
If you’ve been trying to unwind with your favorite YouTube videos on your Chromecast with Google TV only to have the app crash, you’re not alone. Since September 3, a new YouTube app update has been rolling out to multiple Android devices including the Chromecast with Google TV, and while it promises all the latest bug fixes and performance improvements, it’s also delivering an unexpected headache for some users.
Reports have started trickling in about the YouTube app crashing on startup, especially for those using the Chromecast with Google TV. It seems like the update might be behind the issue, as users who enjoyed a smooth experience yesterday are suddenly finding themselves booted back to the home screen today. The frustration is evident, with some users even resorting to third-party apps like SmartTube just to watch the content they’re paying for through YouTube Premium.
Interestingly, the issue doesn’t seem to be affecting everyone equally. In my own tests with the 4K model of Chromecast with Google TV, the app ran without a hitch. However, there’s a growing suspicion that the crashes might be limited to the HD model of Chromecast. This could explain why only a subset of users is facing the problem, though at this point, it’s still too early to say for sure.
YouTube support has acknowledged the issue, reassuring users that they’re investigating the matter. While it’s good to know that a fix is likely on the way, the timing of this glitch couldn’t be worse for those looking to kick back with some videos after a long day.
As the update continues to roll out, it’s possible more users will encounter this problem. But with YouTube already on the case, there’s hope that this will be a short-lived hiccup. For now, if you’re one of the unlucky ones dealing with this crash, you might want to keep an eye on those update notifications or perhaps consider a short break from screen time — at least until things get sorted.

Man, than you for this news! Yesterday I did everything possible but nothing helped. YouTube crashed every time I started it. Now just updated the YouTube app and it works perfectly 😀

Hi, the YouTube app is still not working on Chromecast HD. We have reset everything, but it hasn't worked. How can we revert to the old version?

We have a 4K chromecast and are experiencing the same problem.

Also affecting my Chromecast 4K. Pretty irritating since YouTube is basically all I watch.

Can confirm it's an issue on my HD Chromecast and I'm pretty pissed off this shows a real lack of testing before shipping this update.
