Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We want to make sure our engineering team has eyes on this — can you submit your issue here so they can track it? https://t.co/UpfUaccuG9 No need to do anything else, we’ll reach out if we need more details

YouTube’s dark mode is supposed to be easy on the eyes — especially for those late-night deep dives into music videos, tutorials, or conspiracy theories. But for some users, it’s turning into a nightmare they can’t even see to complain about. Literally.
Over the past few weeks, YouTube users on the web have reported a bizarre and frustrating glitch: when typing comments in dark mode, the text turns black, blending in with the dark background. The result? It’s like trying to write with invisible ink.
The problem first cropped up for a few users last month but has since snowballed, with complaints flooding social media and forums. People are experiencing the issue on various operating systems, including Windows, macOS, and Linux, and across multiple browsers like Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, and Vivaldi. Even disabling browser extensions or switching to incognito mode doesn’t seem to help. The common thread? YouTube itself. Interestingly, I don’t have this issue on Edge and Chrome on Windows 11.
The bug is especially frustrating because it’s not consistent. For some, switching to another YouTube account magically restores the white text in dark mode. For others, it’s account-specific, with even premium users experiencing the issue. Temporary workarounds — like toggling between light and dark modes — have provided relief for a handful of users, but the fix often doesn’t last. And while the text does become visible once the comment is posted, that’s hardly a solution for those of us who like to proofread before sharing our thoughts with the world.
This isn’t the only glitch to plague YouTube users recently. From fullscreen issues on multiple web browsers to parents’ appeals against YouTube Shorts, YouTube users have been dealing with growing pains. But YouTube hopes some of their recent updates like auto-dubbing for videos will improve the user experience.
YouTube acknowledges the problem
After days of mounting frustration voiced on social platforms like Reddit and X, YouTube’s support team finally chimed in. Their response? A polite acknowledgment of the bug and a request for users to submit their issues through an official form to help their engineers track and resolve it. “We’ll reach out if we need more details,” they reassured. Not exactly a resolution, but at least it’s on their radar.
While YouTube hasn’t confirmed the root cause, the issue appears to be tied to their platform’s dark mode functionality rather than any particular browser. That’s good news for users who were worried their favorite browser was to blame. But the platform-wide nature of the glitch also means it’s likely to take some time to fix.
For now, frustrated users have two options: either switch back to light mode (and risk blinding yourself during midnight YouTube binges) or type your comments elsewhere and copy-paste them in. It’s not ideal, but it beats staring at a blank text box wondering if you’ve typed anything at all.
Break up Alphabet Monopoly16-12-2024
Clearly, Alphabet has stretched itself too far, too thin. They can't even manage to change ONE SINGLE EIGHT CHARACTER COLOR CODE that shouldn't have been changed to begin with, and because they intentionally give everyone slightly different versions of the website to 'test things', they don't know which of the literally hundreds to thousands of slightly different versions of youtube need to be fixed. Federal government ought to break up Alphabet; they have too much control over the internet to be THIS BLISTERINGLY INCOMPETANT.

Same problem to me on Windows 11 and Google Chrome (both are fully updated). The same problem is also appeard on the official youtube android application. I wish they fix it soon because that white theme will make me blind for sure :-)

Are you serious right now ? Write it some where else and paste it in, because our 2 trillion dollar company doesn't know how to change text color back....

I remember this happening to me a few years ago and I think I was able to fix it, but not this time. My workaround is to use a simple text editor (Notepad ++) to compose my comment and copy and paste.

Somebody make an alternative for youtube asap and host their videos. Youtube doesn't own the creator's videos. They cannot force us to watch their shit if this keeps on going. I have the exact same problem and it's more frustrating than the dislike removal problem. This Google Inc. is going to get killed someday.

I can confirm that the issue is happening to me as well, its been going on for a few weeks now. I prefer dark mode over light mode, so hopefully they fix this in due time.

The comments are black font in dark-mode for me. A bug which needs to be fix. seriously.

I am currently having the same problem. the text shows up in live stream but doesn't in the video comment while typing. It is inconvenient because I am not able to correct my mistakes unless I highlight. the texts It seems to be a problem for the channel I use frequently. I would like to know how to fix it. By the way I am using a laptop.

Also, when typing a reply to someone else, the letters are almost white (actually they are very light grey) and the text is readable. But if i remember correctly, both the comment text and the reply to someone else text were both white no?

it happens to me and I found a way is to install a Chrome Extension called "Enhancer for Youbube" and go to options and click "Theme" and then click "Youtube DeepDark Custom" Finally you can see the text. it has nothing to do with any browsers and Windows update, so it was just a bug or glitch from Youtube themselves.
VS15-12-2024
It's not a browser it's not your computer. It is the initial comment input field. It potentially is linked to a recent Windows update, as I noticed it yesterday after the said update, but it looks like the problem is ther efor longer than that. It is most likely that field style issue only. If you try to post a reply to another comment your input is visible. So the quick workaround would be to adopt the same style for the main comment input field.

Happened after last WIndows update, changed to light mode until it's fixed

Maybe the deepest of the deepstate deep penetrators didn't like what you were typing.. did you ever consider that?
Sam15-12-2024
Yup. Same deal here, but . . There's a kicker: The Video-Comment box shows 'invisible' text, but if highlighted, the text is definitely there.. It's ONLY happening this way [for me] in that. If I click on anyone else's 'Reply', and start typing, it's Perfectly Legible w/ regular reversed text color. Also.. I checked on other google-owned/run sites, and YT is the only one w/ this issue that I found.. Hopefully they'll stop trying to fix what isn't broken, these sites are their own worst enemy.

I have followed this up with Google support. FYI, I've tested the issue on two different PC's. My PC which a Win11 and my wife's which is a Win10 and both exhibit the same black text in dark mode issue. Interestingly if you do type something in and send it, the text is reflected in white text. Very odd! It doesn't happen on all my iOS devices, only PC's.
kups14-12-2024
I have the same problem. I switched to light mode because I couldn't see the text I typed in the comment section in dark mode.
Crystal14-12-2024
Thank you, I have been searching for hours trying to fix it as it was typing just fine this morning but at some point when leaving a comment on another video it started that color type mode issue. You are the closest I found to helpful information on the matter. Thanks to the others for sharing their issue also, it helps greatly
Nick14-12-2024
Yep, I can confirm. It's just started happening to me.
clutch14-12-2024
I noticed that after a windows update, my system text went black as well. Not sure if this is related or not.
golden178914-12-2024
Great to have found this explanation. Just happened to me. No problem on other account. I hope Google fix this very soon.
