Several YouTube users have taken to Reddit to sound the alarm on what seems to be a major change in the way ads work. According to multiple reports, reporting an ad, which users often do for inappropriate or irrelevant content, might not stop the playback as expected. This has led to frustration, particularly concerning ads that some feel violate YouTube’s own rules.
One user, addtional_talk1956, on Reddit, shared a screenshot of the “block ad” option where the message read – “Ad will be blocked after playing.” This essentially means that they’ll be forced to watch the ad despite blocking it.
The issue seems especially problematic with certain types of content. Some users have reported that NSFW ads are now unskippable and that the report button has been removed specifically for these types of advertisements.
“They copyright and strike/ban whoever to not pay them but when it comes to the type of ads they choose to put in these videos to make other sources of revenue all the censorship is out the window,” wrote user Wonderful_Sundae7158, highlighting the perceived double standard between YouTube’s strict policies for creators and its seemingly lax approach to advertisements.
What’s even more concerning is that there are also reports floating about by users who claim the “Report Ad” button has completely disappeared for certain types of ads. One user, SkylerUndead on Reddit, even shared a couple of screen recordings to show how the feature is expected to work and how it’s not working in some cases. Adding to the frustration is YouTube’s constant attempts to render adblockers useless. Therefore, those who don’t pay for YT Premium are left with no choice but to watch even NSFW ads, with no option to block them instantly.
While some users suggest switching to ad-blocking browsers or alternative platforms, many feel that YouTube should address the issue directly, ensuring that the tools provided for ad reporting actually work and that ad content aligns better with the platform’s community guidelines. For now, many users feel stuck watching ads they’ve explicitly tried to avoid.
