In a world where artificial intelligence keeps popping up in our online tools, not everyone is a fan. Some users find these AI features more irritating than useful. Now, there’s a new Firefox extension that promises to help. It’s called “AI Blocker,” and it was created by Reddit user “greatmanyarrows.” This tool lets people strip away AI content from popular platforms, including Google Search, where it tackles those AI Overviews that have sparked mixed feelings.
Here’s a clip I recorded showing how it works (loads via Imgur):
AI Overviews are the summaries you see at the top of Google Search results, generated by AI to give quick answers. They’ve had their share of slip-ups though. In fact, I recently highlighted some funny and some frankly dangerous bloopers made by Google’s AI Overviews. Errors like that show why some folks want to skip the AI and stick to a classic search experience.
But “AI Blocker” doesn’t just stop at Google Search. It also wipes out AI features in Google Docs, Google Sheets, Gmail, and X. The creator is already planning to add more sites based on what users want. Over on Reddit, people are chiming in with ideas. User “PocketCSNerd” suggested adding DuckDuckGo to the list since it’s dipping into AI too.
Sure, there are ways to dodge AI without an extension. We’ve already covered tricks to disable AI Overviews manually and even filter out AI-generated content from search results. Those methods work but often take some effort. “AI Blocker” makes it effortless by doing the job automatically across multiple platforms.
With Google gearing up to roll out more AI in Search — read about that here — tools like this could become a go-to for anyone who’d rather keep things simple. Right now, it’s available for Firefox, and a Chrome version is on the way. If you’re curious, you can grab “AI Blocker” from Firefox’s add-ons store. The creator’s open to feedback, so it’s a chance to shape a tool that puts you back in control of your online world.
