Instagram users are reporting an unusual glitch where messages in their chats are being incorrectly labeled as “Edited with Meta AI,” leaving users confused. The issue appears to be affecting both group chats and direct messages, with users seeing the label on regular text messages, photos, and voice notes that they claim were not created or edited using any AI tools.
Some of those who’ve noticed it have taken to social media to express their bewilderment. “Why are my friends’ names coming up as ‘edited with meta ai’ what does this MEAN,” one X user posted. Another user firmly stated, “GIRL I CAME UP WITH THIS USING MY BRAN AND MY FINGERS,” insisting that their message was entirely their own creation.

The bug seems to be inconsistent in its appearance. In group chats with dozens of members, some users report being the only ones who can see these labels, while their chat partners remain unaffected. The issue is occurring even in messages as simple as one-word responses like “no,” leading to increased confusion about the nature of the problem.
This label started appearing around the same time users were seeing a notice stating Meta AI can summarize unread chats, edit photos, and more. However, this issue does not seem to be related to the notice.
One user reported success in resolving the problem by updating their Instagram app to the latest version through their device’s app store. So you might want to make sure that your Instagram is updated to the latest available version and see if the label still shows up.
Some users have suggested that opting out of Meta’s AI features might help, though this option isn’t available in all regions. As the problem persists, affected users are left wondering whether this is a temporary glitch or an unintended side effect of Meta’s expanding AI integration efforts.
