Some Discord users on mobile are finding a handy feature suddenly missing. Reports about the issue have popped up on Reddit and X, detailing how the ‘Swipe to Reply’ function has vanished without explanation. Initially, users thought it might be a personal bug, trying fixes like reinstalling the app. While reinstalling sometimes brought the feature back temporarily, it would often disappear again shortly after relaunching or changing settings.

The confusion grew as affected users realized the setting to enable or disable swipe actions had also disappeared from the app’s chat settings menu. One user on Reddit mentioned, “I thought i was the only one and told my friends but they didnt have the same problem, honestly very odd”. Another added, “I can’t find that setting anywhere in the Chat part of settings in the app.” This indicated it wasn’t just a glitch but a more deliberate change for some.

It seems like some users are suggesting that this might be an intentional test by Discord. According to user reports, about 5% of mobile users have been placed into an experiment where ‘Swipe to Reply’ and even ‘Swipe to Edit’ are disabled, with no option to turn them back on. “5% experiment that removes it all together, hopefully they removes that experiment,” one user shared.

This forced change has understandably frustrated those who relied on the feature for quick message interactions. “I am CONSTANTLY swiping to reply so this change is killing me!!” lamented one affected individual.

This isn’t the only change Discord has been testing or rolling out recently. The platform is often updating its interface and features, like the introduction of customizable Nameplates, though sometimes these updates cause friction or bugs, such as the recent Google Photos integration issue on Android.

For users in this swipe experiment, the frustration is compounded because the swipe gesture now simply does nothing, rather than being repurposed for another action like opening the server member list.

We’ll keep an eye out for any further developments and will update the article if and when there’s something to share.
