Samsung has announced that its upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 foldable smartphones will no longer come with the Samsung Messages app pre-installed in the United States. Instead, Google Messages will be the default messaging application on these devices.

This change marks a significant shift in Samsung’s approach to messaging apps on its Galaxy devices in the US market. While Samsung has been using Google Messages as the default app since 2022, it had continued to pre-install its own Samsung Messages app as an alternative option for users.

A notice in the Samsung Members app states, “Starting with Flip6, Fold6, and newer models, the Samsung Messages app will no longer be preloaded. Instead, Google Messages will provide a new and enhanced experience to express your emotions, making communication safe and fun.” This was spotted by Max Weinbach, who shared a screenshot of the notice on 𝕏.

It’s important to note that this change appears to be limited to the US market. Android expert Mishaal Rahman noted that that Galaxy devices sold in Canada and Europe will still come with Samsung Messages pre-installed.

For users who prefer Samsung’s messaging app, it will remain available for download through the Galaxy Store. However, Samsung has indicated that “some features will be excluded” in this downloadable version.

Earlier this month, we did highlight how Samsung appears to be preparing to phase out its in-house Samsung Messages app in favor of Google Messages. This new development just seems to be just another step on the path to the complete removal of Samsung Messages from newer Galaxy phones.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 are scheduled to start shipping on July 24, alongside other new Samsung products including the Galaxy Ring, Galaxy Buds 3, and Galaxy Watch 7 series.
