Lately, something quite troubling has been popping up regarding the Motorola Moto G84 5G and its sibling, the G54 5G. Owners worldwide are reporting a bizarre issue where the coating on their camera lenses appears to be peeling or flaking off, leaving unsightly stains that cause blurry, unusable photos.

Are there any solutions?

I’ve read dozens of posts on various platforms where users reported the issue, however, there’s no single guaranteed DIY fix. A handful of users suggested that they were able to prevent blurry pictures by wiping the camera lens with an alcohol solution. But this is only a temporary solution and only applies for Moto G84 5G and G54 5G units where the outer layer of the camera lens is peeling off. Here’s how one individual described it:

It’s lens coating issue, it’s getting famous since most g54 and g84 users are facing it. And most of then are getting their lens replaced under warranty. Although when I faced this issue I wiped off that coating with cloth and cleaning agent like sanitizer. I didn’t notice any difference in photo quality after removing that coating (Source)

So it seems the best way forward is to get the lens replaced by visiting a Motorola service centre. Motorola support has been recommending the same to those who’re reporting the problem on X.

Sadly, most reports indicate that Motorola is taking several days to replace the lens on the phones. This means, if you’re affected by the problem, you won’t have access to your smartphone unless you have a backup until the service centre fixes the issue.

Reports paint a frustrating picture

I’ve found a concerning pile of complaints spread across the official forums, Reddit, and X (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11). Frustrated owners are sharing blurry photos, describing smudged lenses, and desperately seeking solutions.

The rising concern was even picked up by a technology YouTuber from India who posted a dedicated video about the problem. The video is in Hindi but you can turn on the subtitles and use the translate feature to translate it to your preferred language.

It’s hard to say exactly what’s causing the lens coating to degrade. Some speculate it’s a manufacturing defect, perhaps a faulty batch of camera modules. Others wonder if heat or humidity play a role. It’s disappointing to see these mid-range devices, otherwise well-received, plagued by such a serious quality control issue. It’s vital that Motorola acknowledges this flaw and offers proper solutions to its customers.

Greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I have a G84 5G and had the same issue as everyone else. Tried cleaning with alcohol with success on the macro lens but no luck on the main lens, it got worse. Finally bought cerium oxide powder and Dremel 414 felt disks and buffed with a power drill at low speed for about 8 minutes, rotating the phone to buff evenly. The results are optimal. I can say for sure that the issue is that the anti reflex coating starts to come off the lens. So after buffing you lose the anti reflex coating completely. No big deal, the pictures are crisp clear again, no blur at all. Be careful to mask the phone before buffing, leave only a small hole on the masking tape for the lens to be exposed. It's a shame that Motorola chose such a poor lens cover, just to save some cents, on a not so cheap phone! Shame on you, Motorola, how can you be so cheap, great way to loose loyal customers of the G series!!

I have the same problem, Motorola moto g54 5G, bought 08/2023 in the Alza-soft e-shop in the Czech Republic. About a week ago I noticed foggy photos, I thought that moisture got into the cameras, after reading your article I will try to complain. Hopefully the warranty will be recognized, otherwise I will never buy a Motorola again, even though I like their models in terms of price and equipment. Quality is important to me and I don't buy a mobile phone every 1-2 years, but I have always had it for at least 5 years and they require their flawless operation during this time.

Hi, I have G54 5G from december with same coating peeling of lens.I bought it in December 2023 in the "biggest" e-shop in the Czech Republic. The problem is that warranty repairs are sent to Slovakia, it takes 30 days!

I bought my Moto G84 in December last year. I have severe lens fogginess now. It's really really bad. I bought Motorola because I thought its a good phone manufacturer... well, next time I won't choose Motorola again. Even though I liked there previous models.
